Terms of Service

1. Eligibility and accounts

You must be at least 13 years old to create an account on your own. Students under 13 may use ChemCoach only through a school or teacher account that complies with applicable parental-consent requirements (see Section 2). You agree to provide accurate information when you sign up and to keep your login credentials secure. You are responsible for activity that happens under your account.

2. Student, teacher, and school use

When a teacher or school invites students to ChemCoach, ChemCoach acts as a service provider to that institution. The institution is responsible for:

• Obtaining any parental or guardian consent required by law (e.g., COPPA) before students under 13 use the Service;
• Ensuring use of the Service is permitted under the school’s policies; and
• Administering its students’ accounts (e.g., resets, deletions, classroom rosters).

Teachers may not share student data with third parties outside the Service’s normal functionality, and may not use the Service to process personal information about students for purposes unrelated to instruction.

3. Free plan and premium subscriptions

Free Student plan

Students may use ChemCoach for free, with limits. As of the effective date, the free plan includes up to 20 AI Coach responses per week (calendar-week, non-rolling), plus unlimited access to lesson quizzes, progress tracking, streaks, and reactor challenges (Meltdown Mode and Weekly Duel). Specific limits can change over time; the current limits will be visible in the app.

Chem Coach+ (Student Premium)

Chem Coach+ is a paid monthly subscription priced at $4.99 per month (USD) as of the effective date. Chem Coach+ removes the weekly AI Coach response cap. Prices may change with at least 14 days’ notice; price changes will not apply to your current billing period.

Free Teacher plan

Teachers may use ChemCoach for free with the full teacher feature set — including the analytics dashboard, NGSS-aligned lesson library, assignment tracking, the reteach plan, and the per-student detail view. The free teacher plan is limited to one (1) active class with up to thirty (30) students. Archiving a class frees its slot for re-use.

Teacher+ (Teacher Premium)

Teacher+ is a paid subscription priced at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year (USD) as of the effective date. Teacher+ removes the class-count and roster-size limits — unlimited active classes and unlimited students per class. There are no feature differences between Free and Teacher+; the upgrade is for scale, not features. Prices may change with at least 14 days’ notice; price changes will not apply to your current billing period.

4. Credit bundles

ChemCoach offers one-time credit bundles that grant additional AI Coach responses beyond the free weekly allowance, without committing to a subscription. As of the effective date, available bundles are 50 credits for $1.99, 250 credits for $8.99, and 600 credits for $19.99. One credit equals one AI Coach response. Credits:

• Are tied to your account and are not transferable;
• Are consumed only after your weekly free allowance is exhausted;
• Do not expire and roll over indefinitely while your account is active;
• Have no cash value and cannot be exchanged for cash; and
• Are bypassed entirely while you have an active Chem Coach+ subscription (unlimited responses), and resume being usable if you later cancel.

5. Billing, renewals, refunds, and taxes

• Payment processor. Subscriptions and credit purchases are processed by Stripe. By purchasing, you authorize us (through Stripe) to charge your payment method.
• Auto-renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period at the then-current price, unless you cancel before the renewal date.
• Cancellation. You can cancel a subscription at any time from your account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; you keep premium access until then.
• Refunds. Subscription fees and credit purchases are generally non-refundable, except where required by law or expressly stated otherwise. If you believe you were charged in error, contact us within 30 days and we will review.
• Taxes. Listed prices do not include taxes; we may add applicable taxes at checkout based on your location.
• Failed payments. If a payment fails, we may suspend premium access until the issue is resolved.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Use the Service to cheat on graded coursework outside of permitted study or to violate your school’s academic honesty policy;
• Share, sell, or transfer your account credentials, or use someone else’s account without permission;
• Attempt to access data, accounts, or systems you are not authorized to access;
• Probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of the Service without our written permission;
• Interfere with the Service, including by uploading malicious code or sending excessive automated requests;
• Scrape, copy, or harvest content from the Service for use outside the Service;
• Use the AI features to generate harmful, harassing, illegal, or sexually explicit content, or to target minors with harmful content; or
• Use the Service in ways that violate applicable law.

We may investigate and respond to violations, including by suspending or terminating accounts.

7. User content

You retain ownership of content you submit to the Service (for example, questions you ask the AI Coach or notes you save). You grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, transmit, and use that content as needed to operate, maintain, and improve the Service for you. We do not use student-submitted content to train third-party AI models.

8. AI features — important disclaimer

ChemCoach includes AI-powered tutoring and hint features. AI responses can be inaccurate, incomplete, biased, or misleading, particularly on advanced chemistry topics or any topic outside chemistry. The AI is not a substitute for instruction from a qualified teacher or for authoritative reference material. Do not rely on AI output for safety-critical decisions, including but not limited to laboratory procedures, dosages, reactions, or handling of chemicals.

9. Our intellectual property

ChemCoach, including its software, design, question banks, lesson content, branding, and the “ChemCoach” and “Meltdown Mode” names, is owned by ChemCoach and protected by intellectual-property laws. We grant you a limited, revocable, non-transferable, non-exclusive license to access and use the Service for personal or institutional educational use, subject to these Terms. No other rights are granted.

10. Beta features

We may label certain features as “beta,” “early access,” or similar. These features are provided as-is, may change or be removed at any time, and may have additional terms that we’ll surface when you opt in.

11. Termination

You may delete your account at any time from the app or by contacting us. We may suspend or terminate your account if you materially violate these Terms, if your institution’s arrangement with us ends, or if we are required to do so by law. On termination, your right to use the Service ends, but provisions that by their nature should survive (e.g., disclaimers, limitations of liability, intellectual property) will survive.

12. Disclaimers

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, AND ANY WARRANTIES ARISING FROM COURSE OF DEALING OR USAGE OF TRADE. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR FREE OF HARMFUL COMPONENTS, OR THAT ANY CONTENT (INCLUDING AI-GENERATED CONTENT) WILL BE ACCURATE OR RELIABLE.

13. Limitation of liability

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, CHEMCOACH AND ITS OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AGENTS, AND CONTRACTORS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, REVENUES, OR DATA, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO THESE TERMS OR THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE SERVICE IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM, OR (B) USD $50.

14. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless ChemCoach from any claims, damages, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising from your violation of these Terms, your misuse of the Service, or your violation of applicable law or the rights of any third party.

15. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. The exclusive venue for any dispute that is not subject to arbitration will be the state or federal courts located in Washtenaw County, Michigan, and you consent to personal jurisdiction in those courts.

16. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we’ll notify you by email or in the app before the changes take effect. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page always reflects the most recent revision. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
